Ransom

It hadn’t gone unnoticed that no one had mentioned my current blood addiction at our pow wow with the queen. Sure, I was doing a great job of keeping it under wraps, but the truth was that I was a ticking timebomb. Did Red know? Did she have any idea of the monster she had living under her roof?

I swept the blood off my chin with the back of my hand and tossed the body into the dumpster. Licking my lips, I sauntered out of the alleyway, sidestepping the pile of servile ash in the corner. In my defense, the shifter was already dead when I’d come upon him and the serviles ravaging his corpse. I’d merely stolen their prize. And still a prickle of guilt rose from a dark corner of my psyche. I strolled across the main avenue of the Darklands, my insatiable cravings finally quenched. For now.

I had to taper back my consumption if I wanted to regain control, but it was just so hard. If I hadn’t been saddled down with this new assignment to protect Red, I would’ve just flipped the switch and rode the high for as long as I could. Even if it was likely I’d end up truly dead or worse, back on the Isle of Mordis.

But no, this damned innate desire to protect Red had me skulking off at night to sneak in my next meal. The queen had me on a strict one blood bag per day diet, which was laughable. I doubted Red would open up a vein for me any time soon after the way I’d acted the other night at Sky Lair, which left me with few other options. The cravings were maddening.

I zipped across the bridge back toward civilization. The moment I crossed the river that snaked between Royal territory and the wretched Darklands, a sigh of relief escaped my lips. It wasn’t like I was scared of Ronin or his cursed generals; I just preferred to remain on the right side of the Rive Gauche after my lengthy imprisonment. I saw no reason why Ronin would come after me anyway. It was Red he wanted.

My mind flickered back to his words as I ran. He’d been right. The little sicari had come for me. Which was the only reason he’d ever come after me again: bait. After how I’d behaved the other day, I doubted she felt the same as when she’d performed that daring rescue.

My fingers reached for the empty void at my chest, but I curled them into my palm and shoved them into my pockets. Red had awoken a long dead part of me, and my wolf’s resurgence was messing with my head. Things were so clear before. Now, the idea of having him back, inside me, it… it scared the hell out of me. Which was why I’d acted so terribly to Red the other night.

Now with us living in such close proximity, would my wolf continue to haunt
